In Victoria when you buy property (land which may include buildings), you are subject to paying land transfer duty or otherwise known as stamp duty. The duty is calculated on the market value of the property or purchase price, whichever is greater.
Stamp Duty is calculated on a number of factors and will differ in some circumstances.
If you are a foreign purchaser the Stamp Duty charged is higher than if you are a local purchaser whereas if you are a first home buyer the Stamp Duty charged is lower than if you have purchased previously.
